Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has passed at the age of 76. His family released a statement that reads:

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

“He once said: ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”

Hawking, who suffered from a debilitating neurological disease, was known as one of the world’s greatest minds. He defied doctors and he defied science.

Here are Dan Rather’s thoughts on Hawking’s passing:

“The news hits hard. Our world has lost a shining light.

Stephen Hawking led a life that defied expectation. He was blessed with a brilliant mind and uncommon grace. And through his exuberance and belief in the shared human instincts for wonder and awe, he was able to open so many of our minds to the marvels of our universe.

He was courageous to the end and remained unbowed by adversity. May his belief in the power of knowledge and reason be an inspiration to us all. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.”
