A police officer was shot after a confrontation with a student at the Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville Monday afternoon.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports:

A teenage boy was killed and a police officer wounded Monday afternoon in a shootout at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, said David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The shootings occurred at about 3:15 p.m. after police responded to a call that an armed student was holed up in a school bathroom. When officers entered the bathroom, the student fired at them, striking one officer, and was hit and killed by return fire from police, Rausch said.

The AP adds:

The student died at the school, and the officer was taken into surgery after being shot at least once in the upper leg, authorities said. The officer was expected to recover, and no one else was hurt. It wasn’t yet clear why the student brought a gun to school or why he fired at officers.
