There has long been speculation that President Joe Biden would reward Cindy McCain for supporting him in the months leading up to the 2020 election. Now we are learning she may soon be named to a plum post. Politico is reporting that, according to sources, McCain is being vetted for U.S. ambassador to the U.N. World Food Programme. The Rome-based position requires Senate confirmation.

As chair of the McCain Institute board of trustees, McCain has worked on curbing world hunger and human trafficking. During the 2008 campaign, she traveled to Georgia with the U.N.’s World Food Programme to visit wounded soldiers after a Russian invasion and also monitored the program’s work in Southeast Asia and Africa.

The 66-year-old would be the first Republican appointee in the Biden administration.

McCain’s endorsement is believed to have played a role in helping Biden win Arizona. An ad she recorded for Biden went viral. In it, she said:

“Now more than ever we need a president that will put service before self. A president who will lead with courage and compassion, not ego. A president who will honor our fallen heroes.”
