A tweet from the NRA backfired bigtime. The organization asked doctors to “stay in their lane,” but instead got a viral hashtag.
Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves. https://t.co/oCR3uiLtS7

NPR reports: The NRA was criticizing the American College of Physicians’ new position paper, in which the physicians’ group outlines its public health approach to reducing deaths and injuries from firearms.
Can you imagine criticizing doctors who just try to save lives? Let’s just say it didn’t go over well. The Houston Chronicle adds:
As of Monday morning, 26,000 doctors, nurses, paramedics, social workers and other health professionals, including many in Houston, had signed an open letter to the NRA, penned Friday night and headlined “Gun Violence Is Our Lane.” In addition, the hashtag #ThisISOurLane continues to grow and has spread outside the United States.
Note some of the following posts are graphic:
As a nurse please tell me what lane I need to be as I care for a 19 yr old gunshot victim? Won’t survive his injuries but his parents refuse to accept what is coming. This is MY lane! Why don’t you come sit with his family for the end. Cowards.

Hey @NRA ! Wanna see my lane? Here’s the chair I sit in when I tell parents their kids are dead. How dare you tell me I can’t research evidence based solutions. #ThisISMyLane #ThisIsOurLane #thequietroom pic.twitter.com/y7tBAuje8O

Here's hoping that the .@NRA and .@AnnCoulter realize that this is the reality we face. We seek solutions, and we won't quit because lives depend on it. Help us with #bulletholecontrol. As a physician my daily mission is to protect and preserve life. The sole purpose of a gun is to end life. Treating loss of life, limb, and functional status due to gun violence is what we do as doctors. It’s not just OUR lane. It’s OUR highway #ThisIsOurLane https://t.co/5Lsrd99wce

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter also decided to pile on the doctors. They weren’t having that either.
Hi, Satan! I'm an ER doc. If you add up every gummy bear, cue ball, or copy of your shitty books Ive pulled out of orifices, it doesnt even approach the number of moms Ive had to tell their kids are dead from guns. Stick w/the xenophobia+racism youre so good at and GTFO our lane. https://t.co/HaAH2ZNXhR

.@AnnCoulter and @NRA, you both know #ThisISOurLane.
Since the first drop of blood, the first chest tube placed, and since the first mother on the floor crying, for us, it has ALWAYS been our lane. pic.twitter.com/nQPgXuqXk7
