Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer was addressing a rally in front of the Supreme Court today. The group was protesting a pivotal case before the court on abortion. Schumer told the group:

“I want to tell you, Justice Kavanaugh and Justice Gorsuch, you have unleashed a whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

Schumer’s spokesperson said it was in reference to the political price Republicans would pay. Hours later, the Chief Justice responded. NBC News reports:

In a highly unusual written statement issued late Wednesday, Roberts said “statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous.”

“All members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter,” Roberts said.

Critics quickly pounced on Roberts’ statement because the Chief Justice didn’t say a word after Donald Trump called on two liberal justices to recuse themselves.

And Schumer’s office is not backing down.
