It’s safe to say that things have escalated between Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi. Today’s back and forth seems to put the two at odds, more than ever before. It started as the Speaker of the House emerged from a meeting with fellow Democrats to discuss Trump. That’s when she made this statement:

“We believe that no one is above the law, including the President of the United States… And we believe that the President of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.”

Pelosi then joined Senator Chuck Schumer at the White House for what was supposed to be a meeting on infrastructure, but Trump came into the room and said he wouldn’t work with them until their investigations are over.

Then Trump holds an impromptu press conference in the Rose Garden, complete with not-so-impromtu signage, where he said “I don’t do cover-ups.”

Here was Pelosi’s response.

But it seems Pelosi still isn’t ready to take any action against Trump, at least she didn’t signal that during the Wednesday morning meeting. Politico writes that earlier, she “appealed to House Democrats Wednesday to hold off on beginning impeachment proceedings.” The report goes on to say:

Sources in the room said Pelosi sat stoically while House Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters — a longtime impeachment advocate — broached the subject in front of the 235-member caucus during a closed-door meeting in the Capitol.

Waters told colleagues the House has a responsibility to impeach Trump, and she mentioned her own efforts to access Trump’s financial records from Deutsche Bank. Pelosi responded by pointing to various House committees’ efforts to win court battles against Trump and hold administration figures accountable without taking more dramatic steps.

Pelosi and her top allies believe impeachment is a losing proposition, as in defeat in 2020.
