Never in our lifetimes have we had  to apologize to our allies for our president.  But log on to social media this morning and that’s exactly what you’ll see.  Remorseful Americans giving thanks and praise to Canada (Canada!) after an embarrassing performance by Donald Trump in Canada.  From The Washington Post:

  • Trump’s two-day stop in Quebec for a meeting with the leaders of the Group of Seven industrial nations was exactly the fiasco many feared. On Friday, Trump told reporters that Russia should be welcomed back into the group, which ejected Moscow after its 2014 annexation of Crimea. On Saturday evening, after leaving early to head to Singapore, Trump said he was pulling out of the summit’s joint communique because of comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

So this is where we begin the day.  Donald Trump leaves a 70-year alliance in tatters and jets off to make headlines in more areas he doesn’t understand.  Except this time it’s not milk and cheese but nuclear bombs.  To quote German Chancellor Angela Merkel, “it’s sobering and a bit depressing.”
