Not that anyone has been holding their breath for this, but former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is giving his opinion on the president’s impeachment trial. And he is making it clear he doesn’t agree with Mitt Romney, someone who picked him to be his Vice Presidential running mate. back in 2012.
UVA Today says while speaking at an event Friday at the University of Virginia, Ryan said:
“Mitt is a good friend of mine, and I think it was purely a conscience vote. I don’t agree with the vote; I don’t think it was an impeachable offense. … But Mitt saw it a different way and it was a conscience vote. As speaker, I never held that against someone.”
“There are some similarities between this election and the Clinton election in 1998. Voters liked the economy at the time and we [Republicans] were seen as overreaching for enacting impeachment against a president who, even if you did not like him personally, had a good economy.”
He went on to say, “I think it (the impeachment trial) actually helped the president.”
It’s interesting to note that these comments came a day after Donald Trump negatively invoked Ryan’s name on Twitter.
