A handful of Republican lawmakers are speaking out against the president’s actions yesterday in having protestors teargassed so he could hold a photo opp across the street from the White House.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), “I did not think that what we saw last night was the America I know.”
Politico adds:
Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) told Politico that law enforcement should not have used tear gas to clear peaceful protesters. “But obviously, if your question is, should you use tear gas to clear a path so the president can go have a photo-op, the answer is no,” he said.
Of course Trump still has his share of defenders.
I asked Sen. McConnell if President Trump’s leadership was right for this moment. “I’m not going to critique other people’s performances,” he said.

And there were several Senators who claimed ignorance. Perhaps the most surprising of these was Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT). He has stood up to Trump in the past, but not today.
