The high court, in a 5-4 ruling, has blocked the Trump administration from adding a question about citizenship to the 2020 census, at least for now. From The New York Times.

“In a setback for the Trump administration, the Supreme Court on Thursday sent back to a lower court a case on whether the census should contain a citizenship question, leaving in doubt whether the question would be on the 2020 census.

“Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., writing for the majority, said the explanation offered by the Trump administration for adding the question — asking whether a person is a citizen — was inadequate. But he left open the possibility that it could provide an adequate answer.“

The Times writes that the question could possibly be added but “time is short and and the census forms must be printed shortly.”

The census win for the challengers is Impt not just for its own stake, on a hugely important question, but because it again puts the Trump Administration on notice that the rule of law and the federal courts will not lightly let his grave transgressions stand.

If the question was added, experts have predicted that the population could be undercounted by as many as 6.5 million people.
