Donald Trump has shown time and again that he cast the elderly aside. He recently tweeted that seniors are his “FAVORITE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!” But it’s hard to believe that when his actions say otherwise. Tuesday night he tweeted a manipulated photo superimposing Joe Biden’s face over a picture that showed a group of residents in a nursing home. Clearly, he was mocking nursing home residents.

The Washington Post reports:

Trump shared the image as he and Biden wage a fierce battle for older voters, a demographic that Trump carried in 2016 but which recent polling suggests has moved away from the president. Biden, 77, has sought to capitalize on that trend, traveling to a senior center in Florida on Tuesday to argue that Trump, 74, has neglected older Americans.

Ironically, a short time before Trump tweeted the picture, Biden told people at that senior center the following:

“To Donald Trump, it’s simple, not a joke, you’re expendable. You’re forgettable. You’re virtually nobody. That’s how he sees seniors. That’s how he sees you.”

Even before sharing the photo mocking the elderly, Trump was facing decreasing support among senior citizens.

Back in April, News & Guts wrote about the emotional toll coronavirus has taken on the elderly, and recently there has been more evidence that this group of Americans has been cast aside by the current president, treated as dispensable. That was made clear during a rally in late September where Trump said this:

“Now know the disease… It affects elderly people. Elderly people with heart problems and other problems. If they have other problems, that’s what it really affects…Who knows. take your hat off to the young because they have a hell of an immune system but it affects virtually nobody. It’s an amazing thing.”

At the time the AP quoted Liz Cillo, a 72-year-old retiree from St. Petersburg, Florida as saying. “We’re dispensable. We’re old. I feel as though he’s never showed any empathy or compassion toward us.”
