If at first you don’t succeed ….

The Trump family is considering the Trump National Doral golf resort in Miami as a potential site for a gambling operation. This comes as Florida republicans are quietly floating ideas to legalize casinos in areas that have prohibited them. That includes areas such as Doral, which is in Northwest Miami-Dade County and where there are currently no nearby casinos.

Sources tell The Washington Post that no legislation has been proposed, but talks are ongoing about what it would entail. The bill would reportedly allow developers to transfer gambling licenses to properties in areas where casinos have not been allowed, like Doral. The measure would be designed to prevent local municipal governments from interfering as well.

Turning the Doral property into a casino resort is probably quite appealing to the Trump family. The resort has been struggling for years, and Trump’s most recent financial disclosures show it lost more than $33 million last year alone. Eric Trump, currently running the family business, said in a statement:

“Many people consider Trump Doral to be unmatched from a gaming perspective — at 700 acres, properties just don’t exist of that size and quality in South Florida, let alone in the heart of Miami.”

Of course, given the spectacular failure of Trump’s Atlantic City casinos, which left the gambling city in tatters, it’s surprising to hear the Trump family want to get back into the game.

Current Florida law limits casinos to tribal casinos and horse racing tracks. Each year, there are fights in Tallahassee over whether to expand gambling operations. Given Trump’s close relationship with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, opponents of casino expansion are concerned. So they’re gearing up for the legislative battle.
