The President of the United States is being accused of threatening a Congressman. Donald Trump made the comments in a tweet Sunday saying, in part, that “Shifty Adam Schiff…has not paid the price, yet.” While he has made similar comments about Schiff (and others) before, this time he may have gone too far.

Schiff, one of the House impeachment managers, talked to CNN’s Alisyn Camerota today (watch above) about this remarking:

“This is the president’s kind of organized crime speak and that people would tolerate that or not condemn that in a president just shows how this president has brought down the stature of his office and debased the public discourse.”

And here’s what Schiff said, when Camerota asked, “Just so I’m clear, a threat to your personal safety?”

“I think it’s intended to be personally threatening, I think that’s exactly what the President has in mind and the fact that he would even leave it ambiguous tells you that this is a president who we know that has tried to intimidate witnesses, tried to discourage other people from coming forward like the whistleblower so sadly this is part and parcel to the conduct we’ve seen from this president.”

Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke wrote a strong response to the president’s tweet as well. We think it’s important to read it in full, here is what he said:

What do you call someone who uses fear and terror, who publicly threatens opponents with violence, in order to increase his power and escape responsibility?

‘Trump… told a private group at a hotel Thursday morning that the people who gave information to the whistleblower were “close to a spy,” and said the U.S. should “handle” them like it did “in the old days” — a veiled reference to execution.’ 9/26/19 (NBC News)

Three months before a man opened fire in a white nationalist rage against immigrants – killing 22 people in El Paso – Trump asked a MAGA rally how he could stop the “invasion” of immigrants. When someone yelled back “shoot them!” he laughed and smirked.

Stochastic terrorism: the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted.

After slanderous video Trump tweeted about Ilhan Omar, she said “[s]ince the president’s tweet Friday evening, I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life — many directly referencing or replying to the president’s video. This is endangering lives. It has to stop.”
