Amy McGrath, the former Marine fighter pilot, and the first woman to fly FA-18’s in combat, easily won her race in the Democratic primary in Kentucky.  From Vox: “With help from a viral campaign announcement video highlighting her years of military service, McGrath went from an outsider and first-time candidate with no name recognition to the Democratic nominee.”

McGrath entered the race with a blow-away two-minute tv ad introducing herself (click above).  At one point she was more than 40 points behind in the Democratic primary for Kentucky’s 6th district, but tonight she pulled away early to take the nomination.

McGrath is the latest woman to take on the party establishment and win.

And she has no allegiance to the Democratic party hierarchy because the leadership supported her opponent, Lexington mayor Jim Gray.
