Piers Morgan started the morning by bragging about ratings for the show he co-hosted, but by the end of the day, he was out of a job. He resigned from “Good Morning Britain” after he lit into Meghan Markle following her interview with Oprah Winfrey. This came hours after he stormed off the set while a colleague took him to task for “continuing to trash”Markle (watch above).

Morgan has reportedly criticized Markle a lot over the years but took it to new levels over the last 48 hours. The Washington Post writes:

On Monday morning’s broadcast, Morgan said he “didn’t believe a word” Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in her interview alleging mistreatment by Buckingham Palace, specifically her assertion she felt suicidal and was offered no help.

Morgan also questioned whether the comments made about the skin color of biracial Meghan’s unborn child were necessarily racist.

He also fired off several tweets about it, questioning Markle’s story, calling her “Pinocchio Princess.”

There was instant backlash against Morgan. With the BBC reporting that the government board the regulates the TV industry in the UK received an overwhelming number of complaints:

A total of 41,015 complaints were made to media watchdog Ofcom by 14:00 GMT on Tuesday.

That is the second highest number of complaints in Ofcom’s 17-year history, behind the 44,500 submitted over several days about the racism row involving Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007.

“We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules,” an spokesperson for the regulator said.

ITV, the broadcaster behind the show, released a statement saying the former Celebrity Apprentice winner is off the show effective immediately:

“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

It seems a lot of people in the Great Britain were glad to see Morgan go. Soon after ITV’s announcement, the phrase “Good Riddance” was trending.
