In the early morning hours on Monday, southern Puerto Rico was jolted awake by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest to ever strike the U.S territory. It caused significant damage in the coastal town of Guanica as well as power outages and small landslides throughout the island. A second 5.0-magnitude quake struck the area at 10:51 AM, stoking fears that unstable buildings would collapse. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

From CBS News:

Dozens of people in a neighborhood called Hope in the southwest town of Guánica walked around with their phones and yelled out the magnitude of the latest earthquakes as they tried to calm children who were forced to open their presents on Three Kings Day, a religious holiday, on streets and sidewalks.

“This is hell,” said Alberto Rodríguez, 43, whose home collapsed on its side as the smell of gas filled the air. “We haven’t slept… you can’t remain calm here. Guánica is no longer a safe place.”

Some of Puerto Rico’s well-known natural landmarks also suffered damage, such as the Punta Ventana rock formation.
