The Olympics is dealing with more COVID cases that will sideline athletes and others connected to the games. The AP reports:

An American gymnast and a Czech beach volleyball player were added to the tally Tuesday of people accredited for the Tokyo Olympics who have tested positive for COVID-19 this month.

Tokyo Olympics organizers said 71 people have now tested positive. The total includes 31 people among the tens of thousands of international visitors expected in Japan to compete or work at the Games, which open Friday.

This follows cases from an alternate on the American gymnast’s team, a woman’s basketball player, and tennis superstar Coco Gauff.

Slate writes, “News of the positive COVID-19 cases come at a time when around 11,000 athletes and thousands more officials related to the Olympics will be arriving in Tokyo for the Games ahead of the opening ceremony. And the positive cases are only likely to exacerbate fears among the Japanese public that the Olympics could become a super-spreader event. The Games will be taking place when Tokyo is under a state of emergency due to rising COVID-19 cases.”

Toshiro Muto, the head of the Tokyo organizing committee was asked whether there is any chance the games could still be canceled. He replied, “We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases.”
