John Sanders has been on the job for less than two months, but now the acting commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has suddenly resigned. In a letter announcing his departure, he said, “I’ve spent a significant amount of time over the last several days relecting on my time at CPB.” He did not, however, give a reason for leaving so quickly.

There is speculation that Sanders left as a result of the controversy at the border. The Wall Street Journal writes:

Mr. Sanders and other CBP leaders had been overwhelmed by criticism of the agency and the scale of the crisis, as well as turmoil and frequent changes in policy direction inside the Trump administration, according to people familiar with the agency’s leadership.
