California Burning: Wildfires Explode Across Bay Area

Welcome

A series of fast-moving wildfires, many sparked by lightening, have erupted across Northern California forcing evacuations in rural areas and heavy smoke in the Bay Area. The Los Angeles Times reports:

The newest fires stretched from the wine country to the Santa Cruz Mountains, moving with ferocious speed amid an intense heat wave that also has brought rolling blackouts. Smoke from the fires has caused terrible air quality across the region.

One of the areas hardest his is the area around Vacaville, a city of about 100,000 between San Francisco and Sacramento.

Here’s coverage of the fire in Vacaville from ABC-10 in Sacramento:

The fires are spreading heavy smoke into the Bay Area. Ash has been reported in San Francisco. The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

Many reported smelling smoke and falling ash, including San Francisco residents, and the sooty conditions combined with hot temperatures and the COVID-19 pandemic made the world outside seem especially eerie.

Outdoor decks and car windshields were covered in ash in some locations and the air outside was thick and hazy.
