Ruth Bader Ginsburg continued to make history even after her death as she was honored at the nation’s Capitol. The New York Times writes:
“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg broke one final barrier on Friday, becoming the first woman and the first Jewish American to lie in state in the United States Capitol.”
The honor was arranged by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who “opened the ceremony noting that it was with “profound sorrow” that she welcomed Ginsburg and her family,” notes Politico.
The ceremony was also attended by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, as well as Sen. Kamala Harris. Notably absent were Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House GOP minority leader Kevin McCarthy. Ginsburg’s personal trainer of more than 20 years, Bryant Johnson, did push ups in tribute to his late client.
Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt eulogized Justice Ginsburg:
“Today we stand in sorrow and tomorrow we, the people, must carry on Justice Ginsburg’s legacy, even as our hearts are breaking, we must rise with her strength and move forward,” she said. “She was our prophet, our north star, our strength for so very long. Now she must be permitted to rest after toiling so hard for every single one of us. May the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg forever and ever be a blessing.”
