The 19th: Alex Padilla fills Harris’ seat, leaving no Black women in the Senate
Padilla’s appointment marks a milestone, but those who led the charge for a Black woman to fill Harris’ seat expressed disappointment.
Some people are lashing out at California’s governor for not giving the seat to another black woman. MSNBC’s Joy Reid wrote, “In one go, @GavinNewsom managed to decrease the number of women overall in the U.S. Senate by one while dropping the number of Black women to zero. But who says politics is an old boys club??”
Gavin Newsom didn’t #keeptheseat. So now, Black women are not in the U.S. Senate. #BlackWomenWontForget when you make your presidential run, Newsom. And don’t come over here with the POC solidarity stuff, folks. POC solidarity cannot happen at Black women’s expense. That is all.
