Texas Congressman Will Hurd announced last night that he is retiring. Hurd is the only black GOP member in the House. From Politico:

Hurd, a former CIA officer who was first elected in 2014, has been an advocate for bipartisan compromise on immigration and other key issues in Congress. And he has spoken out numerous times against President Donald Trump, often warning that the president’s rhetoric and positions were hurting the Republican Party.

Hurd represents a large section of southwest Texas that includes hundreds of miles along the border. His seat was seen as vulnerable in 2020.

Hurd is the sixth GOP member of Congress to announce their retirement in the past two weeks. With Hurd’s departure, Sen. Tim Scott will be the only black Republican in Congress.

Hurd has criticized Donald Trump’s border wall and his racist tweets. And, as his retirement announcement alludes, Hurd is staying in politics, possibly with an eye on a 2024 White House run.

It was never my intention to stay in Congress forever, but I will stay involved in politics to grow a Republican Party that looks like America.Rep. Will Hurd
