Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer wrote to Donald Trump today calling on him to “tear down these walls.” The walls are actually fence recently erected to enclose Lafayette Square, near the White House. The fenced area now extends for several blocks on two sides of the mansion.

In the letter, Pelosi and Schumer said:

Lafayette Square should be a symbol of freedom and openness, not a place behind which the leader of our Executive Branch cowers in fear of protesters who are crying out for justice.
