Ah, the border wall.  Seldom has so much time and effort been spent on something so unnecessary. And now we have word that the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, has canceled plans to come to Washington after a tense phone call with Donald Trump over said wall.

According to the Washington Post, Peña Nieto was planning to make his first visit to the White House in February or March but those plans changed after Trump wouldn’t agree to “publicly affirm Mexico’s position that it would not fund construction of a border wall that the Mexican people widely consider offensive.”

In other words, Mexico wants Trump to back off.  And they want Trump to publicly denounce his goto applause line from the campaign.  Peña Nieto finally called his bluff.

According to the Post, voices were raised during the conversation and Trump “lost his temper.”  Maybe because he’s boxed himself into a corner and Peńa Nieto isn’t letting him out.

The Mexican president has been very clear on what he thinks about his country paying for a wall.  This CNN interview clip is from 2016.
