Mike Pence received the COVID-19 vaccine live on TV Friday morning calling it “a medical miracle.” Pence becomes the most high profile person in the nation to receive the vaccine. His wife Karen Pence also received the injection. After getting the inoculation Pence remarked:

“You know, as the Christmas holiday approaches this is always a season of hope. We gather here today at the end of a historic week to affirm to the American people that hope is on the way and Karen and I, we’re more than happy to step forward before this week was out to take this safe and effective coronavirus vaccine that we have secured and produced for the American people. It’s truly an inspiring day.”

He went on to tout how quick this vaccine was produced:

“As the people of this country witnessed this past week under Operation Warp Speed, the first coronavirus vaccine is literally being administered in states across the country to millions of Americans. Make no mistake about it, it’s a medical miracle. The average vaccine I’m told by our experts usually takes between eight and 12 years to develop and then manufacture and distribute, but we are on track here in the United States to administer millions of doses to the American people in less than one year.”

Surgeon General Jerome Adams also received the vaccine during the televised event, remarking on his effort to build trust surrounding the vaccine in minority communities:

“It would truly be the greatest tragedy of all if disparities in covid outcomes actually worsened because the people who could most benefit from this vaccine can’t get it or won’t take it. Working to combat mistrust and misinformation will be critical if we are to ensure the equitable protection of all Americans against COVID-19.”

Meanwhile, literally at the exact time that Pence was receiving the vaccine, the president of the United States was tweeting about what he calls “The Russia Hoax.” The AP points out:

Five days into the largest vaccination campaign in the nation’s history, Trump has held no public events to trumpet the rollout. He hasn’t been inoculated himself. He has tweeted only twice about the shot. Pence, meanwhile, has taken center stage — touring a vaccine production facility this week and receiving a dose himself on live television Friday morning. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell both said Thursday that they will get vaccinated in the next few days.

No word on when Trump will get the vaccine.
