There is a big race this coming Tuesday in Kentucky. Two Democrats are vying to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November, Charles Booker, and Amy McGrath. And the race is heating up as voters head to the polls. As CNN reports:

Long viewed as a lock to win the party’s nomination and take on Republican Senate Majority Mitch McConnell in November, McGrath, one of the most prodigious fundraisers in any down-ballot 2020 race, has increasingly turned her attention to progressive primary rival Charles Booker, a Kentucky state representative gaining momentum — and national attention — as early voting begins.

And Booker picked up a big endorsement Thursday.

Politico writes that “Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have also endorsed Booker, along with the state’s two largest newspapers. McGrath, however, holds a serious cash advantage over Booker as of early June, with $19 million in cash on hand while Booker has close to $300,000.”

The Washington Post adds that some people are asking, “Is this Charles Booker’s moment?”

Coinciding with these endorsements have been protests against police brutality and racial injustice, which a Democratic strategist who spoke to The Fix said Booker handled particularly well. The issue is a raw one in Kentucky. Louisville, Booker’s hometown, has been the site of two recent police killings, including of Breonna Taylor in her home, and beloved barbecue owner David McAtee.

Booker, who is black, attended some of the protests and regularly addressed protesters. “I stand before you as a brother, as a cousin, as a neighbor, as a fellow good troublemaker,” he said.

McGrath has the backing of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer who said, “Amy McGrath is our candidate, she’s a strong candidate.”

The Louisville Courier-Journal cites a new poll showing Booker in the lead:

The survey, conducted by Oakland, California-based pollster Civiqs and commissioned by progressive think tank Data for Progress, found Booker leading McGrath 44% to 36% in the primary match up, followed Mike Broihier at 4%.

The poll also showed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell easily beating both McGrath and Booker in potential general election races this fall, though having a smaller margin of victory against Booker.

Both candidates are getting national attention. Check out Booker talking to MSNBC’s Chris Hayes above. And here’s McGrath speaking with ABC News.
