The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down the state’s stay-at-home order with a 4/3 ruling. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers who wanted the order to stay in place until May 26th said “the people of Wisconsin should be really upset… it puts out state into chaos, there are no regulations out there right now period.” He went on to call it “the wild west”.

The Wisconsin State Journal wrote about the ruling by the court’s Conservative majority, “In its order, the Supreme Court said Health Services Secretary Andrea Palm exceeded her authority with her sweeping order, declaring the mandate “invalid, and therefore, unenforceable,” meaning some businesses and restaurants could open immediately.” And indeed, the bars were bustling Wednesday night (see above from the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee).

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel adds:

To put any new limits in place, the Democratic governor and Republican-controlled Legislature will be forced to work together to deal with the ebbs and flows of the outbreak — something the two sides have rarely been able to achieve before.

The stay-at-home orders were struck down just a day after a poll revealed that 64% of people in the state approve of how Governor Evers has handled the coronavirus crisis. And even after the ruling, he continued to advise residents that they are “safer at home.”
