Words Of The Week: Racist, Silence & Impeachment

As Dan Rather pointed out, “The days for euphemisms… for lies, racism, illegality, and immorality have long since passed.” #TrumpRacist has been trending for two days now. This is not being swept under the rug as another thing a Twitter-happy president says. When history books are written the label racist will be mentioned.

Our country feels so divided.  Anyone looking for Republican leaders to call out the comments that are racist, xenophobic and hateful, don’t hold your breath.  GOP = silence. As of Tuesday morning, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t uttered a word. To yield such power and not react, in any way, speaks volumes. Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson said, “Republicans embrace Trump’s racism and xenophobia. Blame them just as much as Trump.” George Conway wrote, “They’re silent not because they agree with Trump…. They’re silent because, knowing that he’s incorrigible…they fear his wrath.”

While the Republicans ignore the elephant in the room, some leading Democrats could be accused of doing the same thing. Donald Trump has done so many things that are potentially impeachable offenses, but just as Republicans are too afraid to speak out against the president, many Democrats seem too scared to go down the impeachment road. Rep. Al Green (D-TX) says:

“The President of the United States is a racist, a bigot, a misogynist, as well as an invidious prevaricator. To say that Donald John Trump is unfit for the Office of the President of the United States is an understatement.”

Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), one of the Representatives at the center of Trump’s comments said, “it is not if he will be impeached, but when…”
