Two Capitol Police officers want former president Donald Trump to pay for the injuries they sustained on January 6th after a violent mob of his supporters engaged them in hand-to-hand combat.

Trump “inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed, and aided and abetted” the “insurrectionist mob” that stormed the U.S. Capitol and injured 140 police officers, according to a lawsuit filed by Officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby on Tuesday. Five people died in the attack and hundreds have since been arrested.

Blassingame and Hemby are seeking in “excess of $75,000” for physical and emotional injuries. Their lawsuit is filled with Trump tweets and statements pushing the “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen from him, including a line Trump delivered to his followers before they stormed the Capitol: “We fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Trump’s fallacious statements and thinly veiled calls for violence, the plaintiffs allege, directly contributed to their pain and suffering.

The lawsuits also provides new details about the horrifying mayhem at the Capitol. Bassingame, a former Marine and a 17 year veteran of the DC Police, claims that “insurrectionists pushed forward and slammed [him] against a stone column. He struck his spine and the back of his head and was unable to move.”

The court filing also asserts that the rioters called Bassingame the n-word and that he was forced to take cover with a group of lawmakers who weren’t following Covid protocols.

Hemby, an 11 year veteran of the DC police, “was attacked relentlessly,” according to the court filing. “He was bleeding from a cut located less than an inch from his eye. He had cuts and abrasions on his face and hands and his body was pinned against a large metal door, fending off attacks.” The lawsuit also asserts that he was sprayed with chemical irritants.

Both Hemby and Bassingame report depression, emotional stress and trouble sleeping. Hemby is still receiving physical therapy two to three times a week to recover from his injuries.

Two police officers defending the Capitol on the 6th committed suicide in the days after the attack.

Trump has yet to respond to the lawsuit.

Last week, he appeared on Fox News and said the insurrections created “zero threat right from the start…they were hugging and kissing the police and the guards.”
