American superstar Simone Biles withdrew from the women’s gymnastic team event on Tuesday, explaining that she needed to “step back” and focus on her “mental health.”

USA Gymnastics initially said the four-time gold medal winner left the competition because of a ‘medical issue.’ After the competition, Biles expanded, “No injury, thankfully, and that’s why I took a step back because I didn’t want to do something silly out there and get injured.”

Biles fought back tears when she addressed reporters. “Whenever you get in a high stress situation you kind of freak out,” she said. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and wellbeing.”

“We have to protect our body and our mind,” Biles added. “It just sucks when you’re fighting with your own head.”

Biles teammates continued on without her and captured the silver medal.

“For me, I’m proud for how the girls stepped up and did what they had to do. I owe this to the girls, it has nothing to do with me. I am very proud of them,” Biles said.

Her simple (and relatable) explanation for her exit is our quote of the day:

“We’re people at the end of the day.”
