Protests across America became violent overnight with demonstrators from New York to California taking to the streets, angry over the death of George Floyd.

The most destructive protests were again in Minneapolis. The New York Times writes:

Minnesota’s top officials acknowledged early Saturday morning that they had underestimated the destruction that protesters in Minneapolis were capable of inflicting as a newly issued curfew did little to stop people from burning buildings and turning the city’s streets into a smoky battleground.

Gov. Tim Walz said at a news conference that the police and National Guard soldiers had been overwhelmed by protesters set on causing destruction days after George Floyd was pinned to the ground by an officer before dying.

Local officials were hoping the arrest of former police officer Derek Chauvin would not lead to a fourth night of protests. But on Friday evening, the numbers grew. The governor called it “absolute chaos.”

There were violent protests in Atlanta, where rioters attacked the headquarters of CNN.

In Brooklyn, N.Y., it was a free-for-all as protester and policed clashed.
