Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz was back in frozen Texas Thursday night, less than 24 hours after he escorted his family from Houston to Cancun. Cruz issued a statement saying he was accompanying his family but intended to return immediately to Texas, a statement which was contradicted by his airline reservation.

CBS News reported Cruz had changed his booking. He was initially scheduled to return on Saturday but then his reservation was modified to return to fly back on Thursday morning.

And there he was, Thursday afternoon, back in Texas, escorted through the Houston airport.

Here’s the Texas Senator with his explanation of the trip.

Update: The New York Times has added this twist to the story:

Text messages sent from Ms. Cruz to friends and Houston neighbors on Wednesday revealed a hastily planned trip. Their house was “FREEZING,” as Ms. Cruz put it — and she proposed a getaway until Sunday. Ms. Cruz invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” noting the room price this week ($309 per night) and its good security. The text messages were provided to The New York Times and confirmed by a second person on the thread, who declined to be identified because of the private nature of the texts.
