Alabama governor Kay Ivey wasted no time signing the most extreme abortion ban in the country. It bans all abortions, except when the mother’s life is in danger.

Now the fight begins. The law doesn’t take effect for six months and with court battles, it may be put on hold for a long time to come. The ACLU and Planned Parents are filing a lawsuit asking a court to ban the law from taking effect at all. The Washington Post writes:

As a crop duster with a banner saying “Abortion is okay,” hummed above the capitol, circling back and forth around the governor’s mansion, a group of women below let out a cheer.

“Just another day in Alabama,” said Mia Raven, director of People Organizing for Women’s Empowerment and Rights (POWER) House. “We knew this would pass and we got ready.”
