Of all the journalistic investigations published during the Trump era, the New York Times bombshell on Donald Trump’s taxes was the biggest on social media. Axios writes:

The years-long anticipation of the release of President Trump’s tax returns has hit a nerve among Americans, many of whom have been waiting to see whether the returns reinforce rumors of the president’s flimsy financial record.

Axios reports social media interactions on news articles overall have spiked in 2020, according to NewsWhip. (Yes, we can attest to that!)

But for context, investigative stories still don’t routinely perform as well as other genres like “breaking news.” For example, the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the biggest social media story with 10.7 million interactions.
