It’s official: the Biden administration has administered 100 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The milestone was reached on Friday, well ahead of schedule. In December, Biden said he hoped to cross the figure within 100 days of taking office. He did it in 58.

Biden visited the Centers for Disease Control on Friday and celebrated the news, saying “Science is back.”

Biden told CDC officials he hopes the U.S. stays vigilant: “I hope this is the beginning of the end of not paying attention to what’s going to come again and again and again.” The president added:

We can build all the walls we want, we can have the most powerful armies in the world, but we cannot stop, we cannot stop these viruses, other than be aware of where they are, move quickly on them when we find them.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said, “I’m so energized by the future, and yet we have so much work left to do.”

Earlier in the day, Biden told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House that his administration might be able to double their 100 million doses in 100 days initiative:

We hope we can keep the pace, about 2.5 million a day, which would mean that you may be able to get to – may be able to double it. But we’ve met the goal and we’re continuing to move forward.
