A man claiming to have a bomb inside his pickup truck surrendered to police near the U.S. Capitol on Thursday. The suspect, 49-year-old Floyd Ray Roseberry, had been driving around the Capitol for several hours earlier in the day live-streaming from his truck. At one point, he drove on to the sidewalk near the Library of Congress.

The U.S. Capitol Police called for the evacuation of several nearby buildings, as negotiators tried to talk Roseberry out of his truck. They eventually did after five hours, and the situation ended without incident. It’s not known yet if there were any actual explosives inside the truck. Roseberry’s Facebook page, since deleted, showed a string of pro-Trump messaging. He also posted rambling videos during the standoff.

While all this was going on, Alabama Representative Mo Brooks released a bewildering statement where he seemed to empathize with a man who claimed to have a bomb that could wipe out two city blocks.

Part of his statement said:

“Although this terrorist’s motivation is not yet publicly known, and generally speaking, I understand citizenry anger directed at dictatorial Socialism and its threat to liberty, freedom and the very fabric of American society.”

Brooks also points out the the best way for “patriotic Americans” to fight back is by voting in elections. It’s an interesting stance from a man who supports Donald Trump’s continued election lies, and who exhorted the crowd outside the Capitol on January 6 to “start taking down names and kicking ass.”
