Political cartoonist Michael de Adder was let go from a job he’s held for 17 years over this cartoon. It was inspired by the photo Julia Le Duc took of a father and daughter who drowned last week on the Rio Grande.

de Adder said, “The highs and lows of cartooning. Today I was just let go from all newspapers in New Brunswick (Canada).”

The owner of the newspapers has not issued a comment yet about why the decision was made. But some people are suggesting the company’s ownership of an oil company may play a role. The Independent received a statement from Wes Tyrell, the president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists:

Mr Tyrell said that while cartoonists had previously mocked political figures playing golf and showing disdain for humanitarian issues, Mr de Adder’s work hit a nerve by going viral.

“For a brief period de Adder was the poster boy for the anti-Trump movement. A good place to be if you’re a cartoonist, but a bad place to be if you work for a foreign oil company with business ties to the United States.
