During tragedies like the one in Surfside, we feel great pain, but often in events like this, we also see something touching, a community coming together. It’s the things that seem to be so little, that make a big difference. Vigils have been held daily. CBS Miami interviewed Steven Ferriero, one of the residents who attended Monday’s vigil, “It’s not just about being here, it’s about coming together. Anything that happens in Miami, we come together. Miami unites. Emotionally, it’s amazing. Culturally, it’s just outstanding.”

Donations are also pouring in. The Washington Post reports:

The crisis among the living, as is so often the case, is being tended with food and drink, clothes and toiletries, creature comforts aimed to soothe and distract.

And money. So much money. Financial donations have poured in.

Chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen is among those on scene feeding the first responders.

President Joe Biden is also planning to visit Surfside on Thursday. He will no doubt put on his consoler-in-chief hat as he meets with members of the community, rescue crews, and officials.

We have already seen politicians from both sides of the aisle coming together as well. Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has been appearing daily alongside Miami-Dade’s Democratic Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. And today the former Miami-Dade Mayor, Republican Carlos Gimenez shared a picture alongside Cava, while praising her efforts.
