Jeffrey Epstein’s death raises so many questions, not the least of which is will his victims ever find justice. Epstein was found unconscious in his jail cell this morning at 6:30 am. He was declared dead a short time later. Why he had been taken off suicide watch from a previous attempt is one of the many questions being probed by the Department of Justice. Epstein was being held in a federal lockup.

Epstein was being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in lower Manhattan. The facility is run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. From the Washington Post contributing columnist Harry Litman.

Epstein’s death almost certainly means that astounding blunders occurred, perhaps by multiple personnel at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP).

If any prisoner in the federal system should have been a candidate for suspicion of suicide, it was the high-profile and disgraced Epstein. All administrative and structural measures should have been in place to ensure it could not happen. And yet it apparently did.

The prison has housed many high profile inmates including John Gotti, Bernie Madoff and recently Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

[W]e are not talking about inexperienced yokels. BOP personnel, especially at MCC, are the best professionals in the corrections industry, and they receive special training in administrating suicide prevention. Who better to guard against such a horrific development?

Preet Bharara, a former U.S. Attorney in New York believes whatever happened inside the jail cell must have been recorded.

Epstein victims and their families were outraged. From the Miami Herald:

Jena-Lisa Jones, who was molested by Epstein when she was 14, said that he took the coward’s way out.

“I just can’t believe it. We were finally feeling that we might have some justice after all these years,’’ she said, her voice cracking.

Eva Ford, the mother of victim Courtney Wild, was angry.

“How does someone who is this high profile commit suicide? They had to have cameras on him! Someone must have been paid to look the other way,’’ Ford said.

“I just want wanted him to be held accountable for his actions. I would never wish that somebody would die but he took the easy way out,’’ said victim Michelle Licata.
