Rex Tillerson was once the titan of his industry, a powerful CEO overseeing ExxonMobil. Then, in 2017, the course of his career took a different turn. Tillerson served as Secretary of State for about 14 months before being fired by Donald Trump in a tweet. Since then he has been rarely seen or heard from. But this week we learned that he had a bit of criticism for the president. The Washington Post reports:

Former secretary of state Rex Tillerson told members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee that Russian President Vladimir Putin out-prepared President Trump during a key meeting in Germany, putting the U.S. leader at a disadvantage during their first series of tête-à-têtes.

The paper goes on to say, “Committee aides said that Tillerson refrained from openly disparaging the president but that his inability to answer certain questions was revealing.” And “Tillerson clarified that although he and the president shared the same goal, they did not share the same ‘value system.’”

Predictably, the news didn’t go over well with Trump. Instead of blaming “fake news” though he lashed out at the man he once hired. His administration’s goal was to employ “the best people.” How times have changed. Thursday he tweeted Tillerson is “dumb as a rock.” And “ill equipped to be Secretary of State.” It’s an odd response since the president clearly thought Tillerson was qualified when he hired him even remarking,“His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State.”
