An emergency hearing has been called for August 24th by the House Oversight Committee to find answers to what’s going on with the U.S. Postal Service. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Postal Service board of governors Chairman Robert M. Duncan have been invited to testify, according to the Washington Post.
“Democrats have alleged that DeJoy, a former Republican National Committee chairman, is taking steps that are causing dysfunction in the mail system and could wreak havoc in the presidential election. The House had earlier not planned a hearing until September.
“The postmaster general and top Postal Service leadership must answer to the Congress and the American people as to why they are pushing these dangerous new policies that threaten to silence the voices of millions, just months before the election,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Oversight Chair Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.), Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) said in a statement announcing the hearing.
The Post reports the Postal Service is in the process of removing hundreds of high-speed sorting machines that will reduce processing capability by more than 21 million items per hour. And late last week, it began removing mailboxes from several states. The agency said on Friday it would suspend the removal of mailboxes until after the election.
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows pledged on CNN this morning that the Postal Service won’t dismantle sorting machines before the election.
