It appears Donald Trump is now making plans to visit some of the areas hit by Hurricane Michael. He announced it on Twitter saying:

People have no idea how hard Hurricane Michael has hit the great state of Georgia. I will be visiting both Florida and Georgia early next week. We are working very hard on every area and every state that was hit – we are with you!

While Trump didn’t announce plans to visit Virginia, that state was also hit hard. The Roanoke Times writes:

Far north of where Michael made landfall, flash flooding and treacherous roads in Virginia have claimed at least five lives, including a firefighter responding to a crash and a man swept away after his vehicle was swamped.

The Associated Press adds:

Authorities in Virginia say the death toll there from the remnants of Hurricane Michael could rise as they continue searching for a missing motorist and another person who was swept away by floodwaters.

In all 13 people have now died as a result of Hurricane Michael and its aftermath. More than a million are said to be without power.  Meanwhile, no estimate yet on how many homes and businesses were destroyed.

An Air Force base just east of Panama City has also been declared unsafe, with every structure deemed unlivable. Yahoo reports:

Tyndall Air Force Base suffered catastrophic damage when Hurricane Michael tore through the Florida Panhandle, ripping roofs off airplane hangars, tossing vehicles around a parking lot and leaving a fighter jet that had been on display flipped over on the ground.

Meanwhile, people who evacuated Bay County are told it’s still too early to return, especially to Mexico Beach and Panama City. FEMA Director Brock Long said:

“There’s no infrastructure there to support you, and quite honestly it’s a dangerous area to go back into. When you have this type of destruction, there’s gas lines that are there, there’s power lines that are down. In doing so, you’re putting your life in danger, and we ask you to be patient.”
