Under federal law, the adult children of former presidents are not entitled to Secret Service protection.

But in the waning days of his administration, Donald Trump “issued a directive to extend post-presidency Secret Service protection to his four adult children and two of their spouses,” according to The Washington Post.

Now, American taxpayers are stuck with the bill.

In a new report, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government watchdog, found that protecting Trump’s adult children cost at least $140,000 in the month following Biden’s January 20th inauguration. That number doesn’t include money the Secret Service spent at Trump properties.

The extended protection is set to last six months. If current trends hold, it will cost taxpayers nearly a million dollars. From the CREW report:

An additional six months of protection was likely to be quite costly, because, as CREW previously reported, the Trump family took 12 times as many protected trips as the Obama family did per year. The new records reveal that in just thirty days, the Trump children maintained their breakneck speed of travel, and racked up significant hotel and transportation bills for the Secret Service. The transportation amounted to $52,296.75, and hotel costs totaled at least $88,678.39, according to the records.

CREW adds that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump went on a 10 day vacation to Salt Lake City after they left their jobs at the White House. Their security detail racked up over $62,000 in hotel bills.

The Trump children aren’t the only former White House officials who are benefiting from publicly funded personal security. According to the Washington Post, former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former national security adviser Robert C. O’Brien also still receive Secret Service protection.

Donald Trump and Melania are entitled to Secret Service protection for life. Their son Baron qualifies until he’s 16.

The CREW reports concludes:

While it may be tempting to put the story of the Trump family’s profiteering in the past, we cannot until they have actually stopped directing taxpayer money into their own bank accounts. Thanks to Trump’s unusual extension of their protection, they’ve got a few more months to continue the grift.
