The much-anticipated report from the Inspector General concerning the investigation into the Trump campaign and its potential ties to Russia is out. It goes against a long time talking point of Donald Trump and his allies that the investigation was politically motivated. The Washington Post writes:

The 434-page report from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz found the FBI had an “authorized purpose” when it initiated its investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, into the Trump campaign, and rejected the assertion that the case was opened out of political animus or that informants were used in violation of FBI rules.

The report isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement of the FBI. As Politico points out:

The document is also littered with criticisms of FBI officials and how they vetted some information, such as a dossier of salacious allegations compiled by an ex-British spy.

In response FBI Director Christopher Wray responded directly to the Inspector General saying:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) appreciates the OIG’s crucial independent oversight role and the thoroughness and professionalism your office brought to this work. The Report’s findings and recommendations represent constructive criticism that will make us stronger as an organization. We also appreciate the Report’s recognition that the FBI cooperated fully with this review and provided broad and timely access to all information requested by the OIG, including highly classified and sensitive material involving national security.

But there are some officials who don’t appreciate the report’s findings. CNN’s Jake Tapper writes, “US Atty John Durham, leading Barr’s probe into the origins of the Russia investigation, issues a statement saying his office told DOJ IG “we do not agree” w some of IG report’s “conclusions as to predication and how the FBI case was opened.”

Another person who seems to be reading a different report is Attorney General William Barr. Here is his statement:

“The Inspector General’s report now makes clear that the FBI launched an intrusive investigation of a U.S. presidential campaign on the thinnest of suspicions that, in my view, were insufficient to justify the steps taken.”

Even Fox News is countering Barr’s assessment.
