Louis DeJoy’s management (or mismanagement) of the United States Postal Service continues to raise questions about why he is still at the helm of the agency. The Washington Post reports:

DeJoy will unveil the largest rollback of consumer mail services in a generation as part of his 10-year plan for the U.S. Postal Service, according to two people briefed on the proposal, including longer first-class delivery windows, reduced post office hours and higher postage prices.

Last month, the Postmaster General told a House committee that the postal service was in a “death spiral.” As News & Guts reported, “DeJoy, a long-time GOP donor, was appointed to his current position in May 2020 by a USPS Board of Governors controlled by then-president Donald Trump. He was accused of deliberately slowing down the delivery of mail-in ballots.”

There have been calls for DeJoy to be fired, but a president cannot directly fire a postmaster general. Instead, President Joe Biden has nominated three people to the USPS Board. If confirmed, these nominees can join the other Democratic-appointees on the board and oust DeJoy.
