Two unnamed American officials revealed on Tuesday that Hamza bin Laden, son of former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is dead. The New York Times reports:

Details of the strike that killed him were scarce, including when and where. The United States government played a role in the operation, but it was not clear how, according to the officials, who discussed his death on the condition of anonymity because it involved sensitive operations and intelligence gathering.

Last February, the Trump administration offered up to a $1 million reward for information on bin Laden.

Hamza had been groomed to eventually become the leader of Al Qaeda. He had served as the organization’s spokesperson and had important ties to the Taliban. As the son of Al Qaeda’s founder, Hamza’s death comes as a symbolic blow to young jihadis. “This hurts the Al Qaeda brand,” said Colin P. Clarke, a senior fellow at the Soufan Center, a research organization for global security issues told the Times.

The U.S government is still hunting down other powerful Al Qaeda operatives, a few of which are thought to be hiding in Iran.
