Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) says she raised $2 million in the first 24 hours after the start of Thursday’s presidential primary debate.

The New York Times says “that suggests her performance resonated with many Democratic donors.”

Harris announced the haul in an email to supporters, calling it her best day yet of fund-raising on line.

“Harris, whose preplanned sparring with former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. over his record on race relations was the highlight of two nights of debates, collected donations from 63,277 people,” the Times says, citing the Harris email. She said 58 percent of those donors had not contributed to her campaign before.

Up to now, the top fund-raisers in the Democratic field have been former vice president Joe Biden and South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg. Both are expected to announce by Monday how they did after the debate.

It’s an important moment for Harris’s campaign, the Times says, since it “virtually ensures she will meet the threshold set by the Democratic National Committee to participate in debates throughout the fall and winter.”
