The Pittsburgh, Pa. district attorney announced charges against a local officer who allegedly shot and killed Antwon Rose, an unarmed 17-year-old.  The incident has sparked outrage in the city. NPR reports:

“An East Pittsburgh police officer has been charged with criminal homicide over last week’s shooting death of a 17-year-old who was fleeing a traffic stop.

Michael Rosfeld, 31, has been on administrative leave since the June 19 shooting, which has sparked days of demonstrations in the Pittsburgh area.

He was arrested and charged on Wednesday, according to court documents.”

CNN says the results of Rose’s autopsy, just released, show he was shot in the back, face and elbow.

Rosfeld was charged with one count of criminal homicide.

A $250,000 bond was set, but the officer, who was on his first official day of work when he shot Rose, quickly made bail.  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports:

“District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr.’s spokesman said Wednesday he believes the magisterial district judge should not have granted the officer bail.

‘On the issue of bail, our office argued vigorously against the setting of bail citing both the Pennsylvania State Constitution and statute which indicates that persons charged with a crime that can result in life in prison are not entitled to bail,’ Mike Manko said in a statement. ‘We believe the Magisterial District Judge’s ruling on bail was improper but we do not plan on contesting it at this time.’

For now, Rose’s family’s attorney says this is far from over.

The next hearing is set for July 6th.
