The chairman of the House Oversight Committee demanded on Monday that by next week, the Trump White House turn over all emails and other communications sent using private email and message services.
The demand includes encrypted messages, reports Politico.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), clearly exasperated by the administration’s refusal to to comply with earlier requests, said the White House’s “complete obstruction of the committee’s investigation for the past six months is an affront to our Constitutional system of government.”
Cummings pointed out that his first request for documents came in December of last year, before Democrats took control of the House.
“Cummings suggested Monday that his December request, as well as a March 2019 follow-up, went ignored,” Politico says. “As a result … he decided to expand the request to seek all messages sent by senior White House personnel via private email or messaging apps.”
Also Monday, the House filed a new brief in D.C. federal appeals court arguing that “it should have access to years of Trump’s personal financial information,” Politico says.
