We know John Kelly, Jeff Sessions and several others working in the Trump administration have threatened to quit, now it looks like you can add Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to the list. The President reportedly ripped into Nielsen during a meeting on immigration this week. The Washington Post says it wasn’t brief either,

“The blowup lasted more than 30 minutes, according to a person with knowledge of what transpired, as Trump’s face reddened and he raised his voice.”

The New York Times reports:

“Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, told colleagues she was close to resigning after President Trump berated her on Wednesday in front of the entire cabinet for what he said was her failure to adequately secure the nation’s borders, according to several current and former officials familiar with the episode.”

CNN reports:

“Nielsen stood her ground, citing the law in certain instances, the source said.”
“A separate White House official confirmed that Trump exploded over immigration in front of the Cabinet. The official described the remarks as “angry and heated” but also as fairly typical for Trump on this issue.”
On CNN author Chris Whipple said this is par for the course for Trump:

“This is who he is. He loves ritual humiliation. He did it to Reince Priebus. He did it to Rudy Giuliani during the campaign… this is the price of admission if you’re going to work for Donald Trump at this level. It goes with the territory and, quite frankly, they know what they signed up for.”

The spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security didn’t deny the tirade but did deny that Nielsen was close to resigning.

Nielsen herself didn’t deny the report, instead, she released this statement:

“The president is rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of Congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border and protecting the American people. I share his frustration. Border security is the most basic and necessary responsibility of a sovereign nation. These are complex issues and I will continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president’s security-focused agenda.”
